Artist's Comments

In order to improve my artistic ability, I am going to draw every photo in Anatomy for the Artist. Maybe even the non-human stuff too, just for practice. Anyway, this is one of the inside cover pages. I'm not as happy with this sketch as with my first, but since this is my third attempt I decided to just go with it. Everything in my sketch looks too long - her arms, her legs, her hands... but I even scanned the photo into photoshop and used guides, and my sketch is technically correct. I think the model just has longer proportions, and I'm having a hard time sketching that realistically. (I have the most experience sketching my own body type, and I'm pretty short all over.)

Yeah, but it is good that you are questioning why the proportions look off to you. I would say that you shouldn't worry about the shading and details for now. Try doing the sketch in as short amount of time as possible. Then you can do at least a few takes on the pose per page. You don't want to think so much about what you are doing. While it is good to know anatomy you don't want yourself getting caught up in over analyzing things just yet. Work in the broad strokes and get used to feeling the curves and the weight as you lay down your lines. I understand that by nature that you are really analytical. But it is that which makes you want to put detail in to help show the form when all you need is solid line work. I would say that you should also look at the life drawing sketches that animators have done. Look for the one minute or five minute sketches by Aimee. I wish I was better at explaining things.

Otherwise, good job. It is too bad you can't post scans of the photos used.
Yeah I don't want to get in trouble for scanning the photos too ^_^

I will try to do a looser version of the image first, but I don't want to JUST do that. and remember, I *DO* start with a very loose version of the image, and I refine it from there. I'll draw a couple unrefined ones to prove it to you, since you seem to think I go right into the details ;)

I wouldn't worry about even refining it to the point where you put the shading in. I just think it would be more beneficial at this stage to not to focus on the shading at all in these sketches. Everyone at first over thinks on the sketch part and gets caught up with trying to fill volume with shading. I am just saying that you should start with one minute sketches for now. Go through the book and draw each page in one minute. Then go through and draw each page in two minutes. That way you force yourself to go by instinct and you learn to feel the muscle structure in your head. If you want to express a bodies' volume and weight you can learn to do it with your line weight.

Mostly what I wanted to express in the first post was that I didn't want to see you going into too much detail just yet. Over analyzing the human body and not feeling the form through your pencil.
You know...? I still have the basic Open Canvas installed on my computer from when Liz gave it to me. I work primarily day shifts so it would not be hard at all to put a half hour or more a day on OC with you. We could just sketch. It would be good practice just to get me drawing again and I need the time on the tablet to get more familiar with it.
About what times are you thinking?

I usually work till around 4 at the latest. Normally I get home and start to relax by 7 so maybe we can find a couple days a week that we can hop on and doodle. I would have to remember how to join a hosted session. It has been awhile since I have done that.
Last night I was trying to play around on OC, but went nowhere with it. I am going to try again tonight. I had the day off with my brother so we went to the comic shop and as we always do we came up with fucked up ideas for comic parodies.
Okay, that would be cool. Thursday and Friday nights won't work for me, but one day M-W we could do something..
