Artist's Comments

In order to improve my skill, I need more life drawing. However, I have neither the time nor the money to actually take life drawing classes. Many of my artistic friends have advised me, over the years, to buy the book Anatomy for the Artist, and I finally did. Now I am going to sketch everything in it, from cover to cover, to substitute for an actual life drawing class.

This is the front cover. The very detailed, full body image was the first sketch, and then I tried to simplify from there. I want to not only improve my understanding of how the body fits together, but then be able to translate that into my more ... uh, "cartoony" style.

I don't have that book in my inventory so I won't be able to compare once you get into the book itself. But it does look quite solid. The proportions are good. It does look like you are sketching a little tight right now. If you have lighters sketch lines in there they might not have come out in the scan. Feel free to loosen up and let the lighter sketch lines show through. Getting used to working with quick gestures will help a lot when you get to having characters in motion.
They started out a lot lighter and looser than that, I just tightened them down as I went. I started with general, basic shapes and just kept refining from there.
